Flat Island Preserve is a small conservation area in downtown Leesburg, FL. The park was created in the 1960s by residents who wanted to protect the endangered scrub jay. It is accessible on foot and has several small islands within the park boundaries.

Although Flat Island Preserve has no horses or bikes allowed, it does have parking close to its entrance on Old Town Road. The parking lot is small, so if you’re planning on visiting during peak hours (8 am to 5 pm), you might want to consider coming early or later in the day when there will be fewer people around.

The preserve also lacks restroom facilities or picnic tables, but most visitors are happy to enjoy such a quiet setting with little interference from others!

The preserve is free and open to the public.

Flat Island Preserve is a 368-acre preserve owned by the St. Johns River Water Management District that lies just outside Leesburg. The land was purchased in 1989 for $4 million and sat in an area where there was once a phosphate mine, so it has a rich history.

However, most people come to Flat Island Preserve to enjoy its beautiful scenery. Two walking trails take you around the perimeter of this unique wildlife habitat, where you can spot more than 200 species of plants and animals (including alligators).

You’ll get an opportunity to stretch your legs while enjoying a variety of plants and wildlife along Clermont Drive. The flat paved path is surrounded by forested areas, ponds, and small islands within its boundaries. Along this route you’ll encounter numerous benches where you can sit down for a minute or two (or more) before continuing. Enjoy all four seasons at Flat Island Preserve — it’s worth checking out.

There are several benches along the way for rest as well.

As you begin your hike on Flat Island Preserve, there are benches located at the beginning of each trail. These benches are spaced out for convenience and comfort. The benches are made of wood and have backs for support and relaxation. They’re painted a bright green, so they stand out from their surroundings.
